About the Furzedown Project

The Project offers a meeting place for older people, providing a wide range of classes and activities including two adult education classes. It is open 5 days a week, offering information and advice, also giving support to carers.

Health services include regular visits from a community optician and 6 weekly visit from a hearing therapist. We run a Tai Chi class in conjunction with Wandsworth Primary Care Trust. The project also provides a Home-visiting scheme to isolated older people in Tooting and Furzedown area.

A quarterly Newsletter is produced and distributed to all members. The Furzedown Project is a service for older people run by older people with an ethos of selp-help,

We have 69 volunteers - mostly drawn from our membership. The Project is a registered charity, grant aided by Wandsworth Council. We rely greatly on donations and fundraising to offer the wide range of services available.

Our yearly membership fee is £10 and there are reduced fees for attending adult education classes. Most classes however are free. We do make a small charge of 50 pence per journey for those who require transport. (£1 to collect you from your home in and around the Furzedown area and take you back.)

What We Can Do For You

Many of the classes, which are run at the Project, have a direct or indirect impact on health.

In order to combat isolation the Project runs bingo and bridge sessions, coffee mornings, a friendship club and day trips. A home visiting scheme is also provided to isolated older people in Tooting and Furzedown.

Information, advice and support about a range of subjects, such as help with benefits, respite care and home care support are given to elderly people and their careers.

Many users of the Project become actively involved in the day to day running of the Project as volunteers. Volunteering can have a therapeutic effect for those who wish to feel connected with their community and may otherwise feel isolated and unneeded. It can also be a way of obtaining new skills and abilities that many people find helpful.
