‘ If you have a dark cupboard - perhaps a place where you store your jackets or your brooms and shoes - an old pair of tights filled with Pot Pourri is a perfect and cost effective way to keep the cupboard smelling beautiful’.
‘Having spent years battling with the housework a friend of mind gave me the simplest (and best) advice which has really turned things around for me. Break everything into small manageable 10 minute jobs, that way things won't overwhelm you. It worked for me!’
We enjoy our Wednesday afternoon Reminiscence with Music class. Eileen, our tutor, plays all kinds of music then we talk and reminisce about who sang or wrote it, was it in a film or a show? Some music we haven’t heard before but you are never too old to learn. By the way my wife and I have been to Eileen’s class for fourteen years now so we must enjoy it.

And from the World of Dance…
Members enjoyed the talk given by World Champion Ballroom dancers Marcus & Karen Hilton M.B.E. in July. The event was well attended and Marcus and Karen had lots of intriguing facts and fascinating information for their audience. Weighted ‘tails’, ‘suede soles’ and plucked ‘ostrich feathers’ among them. With a swish and twirl tiny feathers fluttered from the frock through the air as Members had the opportunity to examine at close quarters one of Karen beautiful hand made sequinned and feathered frocks. Many thanks to them both for a very interesting morning and for the signed photographs they sent for the Members. We thank Don Smith for inviting Marcus and Karen Hilton to give the talk. We hope they will come back again. Pauline
I’m Obsolete

I never could admit defeat
But now it’s clear – I’m obsolete.
When I hear someone say “dot com,”
I don’t know where they’re coming from.
A mystery that I still don’t get,
Is what and where is the internet?
When Larry said he had a mouse,
I said, “Well, fumigate the house!”
Am I the only living female,
Who doesn’t understand e-mail?
I always vote and pay my taxes,
But I’m not sure what a fax is.
Nor do I quite know what it means,
When people go to church in jeans.
It doesn’t matter what we wear,
The main thing is that we are there.
Sometimes, I must tell myself,
“You’re old. You belong on the shelf!”
But really, that’s not hard to bear
I’m obsolete, and I don’t care!

You can improve your mental health and well-being at any age. Start as early as you can, to bank good mental health for the future – it’s never too late to start!
Dr June Crown CBE is a public health physician and chairman of the UK Inquiry into Mental Health and Well-Being in Later Life.
Here are her top tips for maintaining good mental health and well-being in later life:
1. Incorporate exercise into your daily routine
Physical activity is good for your mental health. Even more reason to take the dog for a walk, dig the garden, enjoy a dance, or use the stairs instead of the lift.
2. Eat a balanced diet and drink sensibly
What you eat and drink can affect how you feel.
3. Keep your brain alive
Learn something new. “Lifelong learning keeps the mind and spirit alive.”
4. Maintain a good “work”-life balance
Whether you are in paid or unpaid work (for example as a volunteer), make sure you keep a balance. Take breaks. Ask for help if you need it.
5. Keep in touch with friends and loved ones
Close relationships are important for good mental health and well-being.
6. Do something for others
Many older people say that volunteering helps them to maintain good mental health and well-being in later life. “The best cure for the blues is activity. Do something – preferably for someone else.”
7. Plan ahead and develop interests that can truly be life long “People in their 50s should prepare
for old age by developing interests [earlier on] that will be accessible to them as they become older.”
8. Plan your day in advance
Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Many older people say that what helps them to feel good is waking up in the morning and knowing what is planned for the day.
9. Claim what you’re entitled to
Find out what benefits you are entitled to and make sure you claim them. Up to £4.1 billion in money benefits is failing to reach the pockets of millions of pensioners every year.
10. Use your voice
Challenge discrimination whenever it happens, whether to you or others
